How Can Yoga Help in The Healing Process?

Experiencing trauma affects every part of our being—mental, emotional, and physical—often leaving the nervous system stuck in survival mode (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) and/or manifesting as somatic reactions or felt sensations in the body.

Many trauma symptoms can be difficult to verbalize and for some, having to share their story can be triggering. Lotus of Hope classes emphasize self exploration and expression at the physical level which, as David Emerson and Elizabeth Hopper explain in their book, Overcoming Trauma through Yoga, "has a ripple effect on emotional and mental health, on relationships, and on one's experience of living in the world".

Trauma Informed Yoga offers a powerful and compassionate path to healing by addressing the deep connections between the body, mind, and nervous system. Lotus of Hope yoga classes incorporate the tenants of trauma informed care into mindful movement and breath, encouraging participants to reclaim choice and agency, restore a sense of safety and trust, and gently regulate the nervous system on the path to healing.
